Yoga And Addiction Recovery

Yoga And Addiction Recovery Offer The Recovering Addict Better Tools To Cope With Their Feelings.

Yoga helps to overcome addictions such as the addiction to alcohol. The reasons why people take large quantities of drugs and alcohol is to repress their emotions of fear, loneliness, anger and lack of self esteem. Once an addict has started on a program of recovery they find themselves confronting the issues that they were trying to escape from through their addictions. Panic and anxiety start to take over. Through the practice of yoga the practitioner learns a new way to confront the issues that have been haunting them. Yoga practitioners learn how to develop a thoughtfulness between the conscious and the spirit.

This is a tool the recovering addict learns to use instead of the drug they were addicted to. The practice of yoga helps the yoga practitioner, or yogi, to feel more whole than ever before. When they recall the fragmented lives they had lived as drug and alcohol addicts they are no longer tempted by those memories. Their practice of yoga has taken over as a better, more powerful alternative. Yoga offers a healthy mind and body. The recovering addict who practices both the Twelve Step Program and yoga together will be progressing well beyond recovery. It offers practitioners an opportunity to explore their spirituality.

The goal in yoga is to make oneself feel better physically. When following this process of trying to attain a better physical state the mind too wants to be put into a better feeling. The physical practice helps to train the mind to be calm. When one feels physically stronger it is easier to cope with the stresses of everyday life. The recovering addict who practices yoga will be coming from a place of calm to cope. They learn to not run away from the challenge since they have already trained their bodies not to run away.
